The McLaren driver just pipped fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the quickest lap in the closing stages of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the title advantage from Piastri by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City recently, topped the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Until that point, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair during the running before the sprint shootout scheduled for the evening session. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the championship fight, sitting with a 36-point deficit Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to have an incident, though minor, when he rotated at Turn Four soon after starting. The Japanese spun out over the exit kerbs before spinning across the gravel trap, and was fortunate to avoid just a minor contact of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the final moments of the session, rotating twice through the fast downhill corner before the last turn on to the main straight. Hamilton wrapped up in 19th place, trailing teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were far ahead of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber third fastest, over half a second slower than Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
